Isle of Harris, Day 5. Scalpay

Unusually we woke to a cloudy morning but this was not to last. By the end of the day it was cloudless and 20C again. After two hectic days we were a little more relaxed this morning and took time out to catch up with ourselves and have a sauna. Our first port of call was a few miles further north on the Bays  Road where we called in at a Harris Tweed exhibition and shop. The exhibition was fascinating as was the shop. We could have spent a fortune but we contented ourselves with considerably less. Passing through Tarbert we joined the road to the Isle of Scalpay, linked to Harris, now, by a recent bridge. We stopped, on the way to visit a photography gallery/tea shop. Very nice. Once on Scalpay we visited the north harbour for some photography and checking out the Arctic terns before continuing to the start of the footpath  across the moor to Eilean Glas lighthouse. The path zigzags across high ground before dipping to the coast with striking views down to the lighthouse. We could see across to the Shiant Islands and beyond to the Uig peninsula and the jagged ridge of the Cuillin. Birdwatching was good here with stonechat and out to sea gannet, shag, puffin, guillemot and razorbill. Back in Tarbert we called in at the Hotel Hebrides for a meal before returning to the cottage and our own view of the Cuillin ridge on Skye.

  1. It sounds as though the bothy is beginning to feel like home. The tweed exhibition and shop sound fascinating.
