Lake District March/April

We visited our caravan on the edge of the Lake District for the first time this year from 30th March - 7th April and it was good to find it in fine fettle and to get it cleaned (us) and serviced (Leisure Medics). We began our journey on Saturday by staying over night in Sheffield with our son, Thomas and patrner Katy. While we were packing we watched the partial eclipse of the sun with a rudimentary pinhole camera. Exciting and awe inspiring. We were up and away on the Sunday and, after a good but hectic journey with busy traffic around Manchester, arrived at the van before 3.00. We were soon set up and enjoying a cup of tea outside in the sun.

Most of Monday was taken up with cleaning 'the outfit' after which we went to the excellent Plumgarths for some shopping.

Tuesday saw us visiting my old teacher and running coach and then heading off to Leighton Moss for the afternoon. The weather continued to be perfect with not a cloud in the sky and temperatures of 16C. It was beautiful on the reserve as usual and we saw 41 species. The highlights were marsh tit and booming bitterns which we love to hear. A quick visit to the saltmarsh hides provided a few more species: a large flock of black-tailed godwit, avocet and redshank. There was ample evidence of the recent very high tides and tidal surge; the saltmarsh was still flooded. We finished the day at one of our favourite places: sitting in the sun on the terrace of the Albion in Arnside with a pint while looking out over the Kent estuary.
