 Despite being very windy, especially on The Horsefield which made photography challenging, it was a warm day with temperatures up to 22C. I was delighted to find peacock in both locations; my first for a while.

Garden Butterflies.

 The sun finally decided to come out today and the wind to drop and we immediately had some butterfly visitors so I decided to complete a productive Big Butterfly Count.

 We had been staying in York for a 70th birthday treat and decided to call in at Scampston Walled Garden on our way home. Somewhere we had log wanted to see. We enjoyed our visit despite have to dodge the biblical storms.

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2023

 I spent a very pleasant hour this morning on a grey and gloomy day carrying out the RSPB Garden Birdwatch.  Results, however, were disappointing, although not untypical for this garden where we get few birds. Although the norm for our garden, bird numbers do seem to be down. There is definitely less activity at my winter feeding station than normal, although blue tit numbers seem to be up as do blackbirds, some of which may be continental birds.

My results were:

• Blackbird 1
• Robin 1
• Great Tit 1
• Magpie 2 (They seem to be building a nest in the cherry tree)
• Chaffinch 3
• Crow 1

Garden Pasque Flowers.

 I have been watching our pusiltilla or pasque flowers coming into flower and decided that today was the day to photograph it.

Greenfinches in the Garden

 I was delighted, today to see a flock of 5 green finches moving through the garden.  I can't remember the last time I saw a greenfinch; a real treat and fantastic news.

Easton Walled Garden

 On what turned out to be the last day of good weather for at least a week we enjoyed a fabulous day at Easton Walled Garden on a beautiful day with the first touch of Autumn in it: backendish!

The gardens as usual were superb and I had a feast of photography.  Easton gardens are renowned for their sweet peas and we bought some of their seeds; fingers crossed for next year.  We plan to sow them this autumn and then overwinter them in the cold frame or our next door neighbour's greenhouse.

I am always fascinated at Easton, by the River Witham flowing through the garden.  Here it is close to the source and is a beautiful chalk stream; very different to the Witham draining the fens where I spent my childhood.
