A Day at the Feeding Station

As I was due to visit my old school to report back on the RSPB Bird Watch last Tuesday I decided to make the rounds of the feeding station to top up the feeders and do some photography at the wood yard.  Things were fairly quiet here apart from a lot of activity from a couple of robins and great tits.  Chaffinches were about and dunnock were busy feeding on the ground as usual.  Goldfinches and great tits made a visit.

At Scallows there was plenty of activity from the various members of the tit family and nuthatches and I heard a woodpecker calling and feeding nearby.  The aconites and snowdrops were in their prime.

An Influx of Blackbirds at the Yard

As the weather had been very cold for the last few days I knew that it was time to get down to the yard to top up the feeders and, as the weather was looking promising I enjoyed a couple of hours of photography in the hide.  It was immediately noticeable that there were large numbers of blackbirds about; a minimum of ten.  Presumably they are part of an influx from the continent, driven here by the current cold snap.  They were incredibly gymnastic and well able to perch on the fat block holders to eat their fill.  Goldfinches were plentiful as were dunnock doing their usual running around on the ground along with the chaffinches.  There are at least three robins just about tolerating each other whilst great and blue tits are in and out regularly along with a couple of long tailed tits.  It was good to see the greenfinches putting in an appearance again, but yet again there was no sign of the woodpeckers.
