Spain ,May/June 2018. Day 8

A division of forces today.  Our loyal lieutenants had their sights on the market in and further exploration of Potes so we dropped them off and then headed back up the valley to Fuente De to catch the cable car up into the big hills.  However, plans had to be redrawn when got there as cloud and drizzle filled the valley never mind the tops.  So, after a coffee, we drove back down the valley and up to Lon, one of the fascinating stone and wood built villages with lichen and moss covered pan- tiled roofs above our site.  On the way down we called in at the site to collect an extra map and had great views of our resident male common redstart.  Superb.  The local jays are also showing well.
Our change of plan involved a return to the Puerto San Glorio pass - great for flowers and views - maybe.  Before leaving Potes we needed fuel and found a magnificent colony of lizard orchids right in town.  Amazing.
The views at the pass were non existent so a message from Thomas to report a bike ride in 25C temperatures and cloudless skies was not greeted enthusiastically.
Dropping down from the pass, however, brought us to more clement conditions and we enjoyed a couple of hours pottering up a superb valley which produced orchids and other botanical interest as well as a deer skeleton trapped in a waterfall gully which we failed to extract, despite sending the boy into the stream up to his knees.  We also discovered a huge wild boar skull but it was deemed too stinky to bring home  although we may go back for it if we can procure some bleach.
Eventually it was time to return to base, first calling in at a local butcher to practise my dazzling Spanish in order to purchase steak for the BBQ.   When we got back it was, of course, that time of day.
