Despite a Gloomy Afternoon, Plenty of Butterflies on the Horsefield.

I was keen to catch up with things on the Horsefield after an absence of three weeks and, needing a walk, I went for a wander despite the gloomy afternoon.  It was warm, though, so I was optimistic.  The big thing I did notice, however, was how the vegetation has exploded; rank now as much as lush.  Down to the warm weather and copious amounts of rain, I think.  Everything is much more grown up than last year.  There were plenty of butterflies about as well; not a huge variety of species but good numbers, the most individuals I have seen on here this year.

  • Small white  11
  • Ringlet  36
  • Yellow shell moth 1
  • Meadow Brown 37
  • Small Tortoiseshell 1
  • Speckled Wood 1
  • Six Spot Burnett Moth 4
  • Small Skipper 2
  • Cinnabar Moth 1
  • Shaded Broad-Bar Moth 2
  • Common Hawker dragonflies 2
I had hoped for gatekeeper as well but no luck as yet.  Also no common blues again and no large whites, in fact I have still to see a large white on the Horsefield this year.
