Whitby, Day 1

Packing and loading the car went well and we were soon on our way across the Humber Bridge.  There seemed to be quite a queue this morning, perhaps because it was card payments only.  The weather deteriorated as we travelled north but going though Scarborough it began to clear.  Sadly as we arrived at the car park at Boggle Hole it set in again with determination.   The decision was made to change the itinerary and go to the Moors Centre at Danby which was excellent as usual.  The views down to Esk Dale and up Great Fryup Dale were superb and there was snow on the tops, glimpsed through the murk.
It was good to settle into cosy rooms in the Youth Hostel before wandering down into Whitby for a preprandial pint of Theakstons in the Board Inn followed by the traditional F&C at the Magpie.  We were surprised to find that Whitby was closing by the time we had finished our meal; lack of customers on a cold December evening in a pandemic blighted country.  We did manage to get a pint of Blacksheep in the Duke of York to get us up the 199 steps.  Of course there was a night cap of Islay malt to look forward to back at the billet.
