Lake District, April 2024. Day 4

We awoke this morning to find that the wind had dropped, although rain was forecast, so we were up early to put up the awning before it started. All went well and so it was time for a shower and then breakfast. Once revictualled we set out with Nigel and Jackie to walk across to Stavely for lunch in Wilf's cafe. We were amazed when we walked up Ashes Lane to fine that the fields had been planted with a mixed hedgerow either side of the lane and adjacent footpaths and a strong fence was being erected. We have since found out that the land has been acquired for a rewilding project so we await developments with interest. Unfortunately it means that we cannot get up to 'our tree'.

Wilf's was, as usual, excellent. On going out onto the outside decking above the weir I could see that the dippers have a nest in their usual hole in the wall. A dipper flew past up the river so hopefully the nest is being used. On the way back we saw wheatear, grey and pied wagtails, buzzard and red kite. Again we heard good numbers of singing chiffchaff and also curlew. On our return the sun had come out and it was really warm so we were able to sit outside with a cup of tea.
