Scotland, September 2014, Achmelvic Day 2

A lazy start today.  Looking out of the window the clouds out to sea were tinged rose red from the rising sun, but inland was low dark cloud.  This soon began to clear to leave a bright sunny morning. Eventually we geared ourselves up to move, although Heather had been down to the beach drawing.  Our first port of call was Lochinver for fuel (megabucks’ 20p/litre more than home) and tea and cake as well as a look at the shops and a visit to the Tourist Information Centre.  Following this we drove along the ‘Wee Mad Road’ down to Achiltibuie.  This an amazing single trach road twisting and turning its way south with fabulous views of coast and mountains.  Canisp, Suilven and Stac Polaidh leap up vertiginously out of the lower ground and belie their modest stature.  Achiltibuie has a totally different feel to i; much more open with expansive views to the Coigach Peninsular and across to Torridon and it’s huge Munros as well as stunning views of the Summer Isles out to sea.  Before the return drive we enjoyed tea and scones in the Summer Isles Hotel.  Our return to the site coincided with sunset so we scrambled up the hill behind the site watching and photographing as the sinking sun set the sky and landscape on fire.

Tomorrow and Sandwood Bay awaits.
