Iona, June, Day 4
Gale force winds today, beating up the sound from the south. With the winds came rain for much of the day. White caps were sweeping along the sound and the ferry stuggled to get into both Fionnphort and Iona until eventually it was suspended for a while. At one point the cloud descended until Mull was totally obscured. In the evening, after compline, the wind dropped away and the sky cleared to give a wonderful sunset. We walked up to the far north west beach with Nigel and Jackie, corncrakes calling all the while. As the sky was only just clearing there were still plenty of clouds to give the sun something to reflect from. There was deep, rich crimson/orange with a sky of perfect duck-egg blue. On the way back there was a superb afterglow with orange on the horizon and deepest blue above. It is said that 'Iona is a thin place, the dividing line between the physical and the spiritual is like tissue paper'; we certainly felt that this evening.
