France May/June 2016, Day 3

A goodnight’s sleep last night after a delicious meal in the hotel restaurant.  Breakfast this morning was typical French and excellent.  We set off along the backroads bordering the Seine towards Giverny on the way to Monet’s Garden following the directions suggested by the friendly hotel proprietor and chef.  It wasn’t long before we spotted orchids so we pulled up and out came the camera.  Pyramidal and some superb lady orchids were easy to identify, but a couple of others are going to need some more work.  An excellent start though.  Although heavily overcast it had dried up and was not as bad as forecast, in fact not bad at all for photographing gardens.  We quickly reached Giverny and Sally Sat Nav blotted her copybook by taking us through pedestrian only roads to get to the car park.  We very much enjoyed looking round Monet’s garden and house despite there being a lot of people there – I suppose it was a Sunday.  I was impressed with the size of his studio, now the gift shop.  The water Lilly lake was rather special, like the rest of the garden it was amazing to think that it had been designed and created by the man himself and has been loving restored.  On our way back to the hotel we made a detour to photograph Chateau Galliard which towers over the village where we are staying.  It was built by Richard the Lionheart as a defence against the French!!!  We arrived back just as the heavens opened and are enjoying a lazy evening ready for a day of travelling tomorrow.
