France May/June 2016. Day 14 Mont Aigoual

A slightly better day today for weather.  We actually managed to have a coffee outside in the sun before we set off for the day and BBQ in the evening.  We headed for Mont Aigoual, at 5300 feet, the highest summit around.  Apart from its height it possesses a weather observatory with a very interesting visitors centre.  It also has elderflower orchids and wild tulips growing on its upper slopes.  Although having better weather, sadly the summit was in cloud so we were denied the views, but the flowers were wonderful, even in fog.  Heather and I decided to return to Riviere via the Causse Mejean in the hope of better conditions than yesterday and also to try to locate the rare Przewalski Horses which live up here.  They are a very ancient breed of wild horse and became virtually extinct apart from in zoos.  Individuals from zoo collections were sent to this site to be released and rewilded as part of a conservation project.  It is hoped eventually to release them back into their native Mongolia.  We were successful in our quest but only managed distant views.
