France May/June 2016. Day 20 Les Sucettes de Born. Orchids and Butterflies.

Another excellent day made even more special by the fact that our son Thomas and his friend James have joined us for a couple of days.  They began their trip in May in the Picos de Europa Mountains of northern Spain as part of their Outdoor Studies degree and have since travelled through the Spanish and French Pyrenees, the Mediterranean coast and are on their way to the Alps.  The weather has been excellent again today; we are beginning to expect it.  We have been down the Borne Valley and walked up to the Col de Preyer via the Sucettes de Borne.  Sucettes translates as lollipops and they are well named.  Formed from horizontal beds of limestone that were folded to vertical during earth movements.  Erosion has since worn away the softer material between to leave huge vertical wedges of rock reminiscent of lollipops.  Flowers were again spectacular.  We found another ladies slipper orchid among others and the hay meadows were a riot of colour.  Butterflies were plentiful but not always easy to either photograph or identify.  Not long after our return to the site Thomas and James arrived in their white van full of road and mountain bikes camping and climbing gear.  We enjoyed an excellent pizza meal at the campsite snack bar.
