France May/June 2016. Day 17 The Vercors

Well even the French weather forecasters don’t get it right.  They gave dry and warm with sunny intervals for today so we set off with high hopes.  Actually had we stayed at the site it would have been right; the mistake we mad was crossing the 5000 foot high Col de Menee into the next valley where it rained on and off most of the day.  When we returned to the site there had been no rain at all.  Three years ago when we were here towards the end of our fateful Italy trip the valley temperature was 8 degrees centigrade.  This year we have temperatures of twenty degrees, but the views three years ago were much better as the air was crystal clear.  We felt that we could touch the Ecrins mountains in the Alps from the top of the col.  We did, however find superb trumpet gentians and yet more Ladies Slipper Orchids, even by the roadside.  Amazing.  We finished the day with pizza and chips from the campsite bar.  Another excellent, if damp, day.  The forecast for tomorrow is good.

  1. A very biblical photograph with the natural separating of the sheep and the goats! Interesting that the goats were at the front, nearest to the shep/goatherd.
