Nev Cole Way, Stage 1

The Nev Cole Way is a 58 mile long distance footpath starting at Burton-Upon-Stather above the River Trent in the north west corner of Lincolnshire.  It follows first the Trent and then the Humber to Killingholme Haven and where it diverts inland to avoid the Humber Bank industries and Immingham.  At Grimsby it makes a turn into the Lincolnshire Wolds and finishes at Nettleton near Caistor.  The walk is dedicated to Nec Cole who devoted his life to the preservation and development of our rights of way system.  We have broken the walk down into late afternoon/evening chunks to make it doable for those with bad backs and each stage finishes within reach of a hostelry providing good beer and food.

After the usual juggling around with cars we set off from Burton church and soon found ourselves on the wooded cliff high above the Trent.  Once out of the trees we began to enjoy expansive views of the river both south and north to its confluence with the Ouse where it becomes the Humber.  We gradually gained excellent views down to Alkborough Flats LWT reserves and over the river to Blacktoft Sands RSPB reserve.  Wlaking through the woods above Alkborough it was a delight to hear the yaffle of green woodpecker and the wild call and bubbling song of curlew rising up from the marsh.

At Alkborough we took in Julian's Bower and turf maze set high above the reed beds of the LWT reserve before continuing to Whitton.  The path now gradually made its way down hill and we again heard the yaffle of another green woodpecker as we made our way down across fields towards Whitton church and the car.

An excellent fist stage which culminated in liquid refreshment and food at the Nelthorpe Arms in South Ferriby.
